A Note From Mr Thornes |

Hello all,
I'd like to offer you a warm welcome to our website.
We've recently updated the site and it's now easier to navigate and reflects the principles of Livingstone very well.
We are a community school at Livingstone and we love to inspire the pupils, we celebrate our differences whenever possible. Our pupils have active minds, tons of enthusiasm and there's always a lot happening here.
I'm really proud to be leading a fantastic team of staff and everyone is united in our effort to help every pupil improve and meet their potential. School life here is fun, stimulating, varied, rigorous but also above all enjoyable.
Have a look about, or come and see us in action!
Welcome to Livingstone...

Woodpeckers have had a busy start to the autumn term. In maths they have been thinking about place value and using the manipulatives to explain their reasoning. They are also thoroughly enjoying their weekly adventures in Forest School. So far, they have learnt to build dens, identify insects on the school field and use natural materials in craft activities.

The children are really enjoying learning about the Stone Age. This week we have been looking in further detail at cave art - why the pictures were drawn and what materials were used. The children looked at some sketches and drew them in their art books. The results were amazing!

To celebrate Black History Month, Reception have really enjoyed a unit of work all about the life of Bob Marley.
We learned all about his life and works and the impact he had on music and the wider world. We learned to sing the songs '3 Little Birds' and 'One Love' and talked about the meanings behind the songs. We decorated our own birds and wrote things that make us happy on them.
We also learned all about Bob Marley's homeland of Jamaica and decorated our own Jamaican flags using collage techniques and took a trip to Jamaica in the role play area!

This week we have been very busy in Woodpeckers. Not only have we had fun investigating 3 digit numbers, we have also been investigating what Stone Age people ate. We then went into the playground as hunter gathers to find food our tribe needed to stay alive.

Thank you to all the parents and carers who joined us for our Reading Café. It was wonderful to see so many of you sharing stories, enjoying books, and spending quality time reading with your children. Your support helps foster a love of reading and makes these moments so special for our school community.

Year 1 had a great afternoon taste testing different foods as part of their science learning all about our senses. They learnt about how our taste buds work and described how different foods tasted. Not many were keen on the taste of the sour bitter lemon but the chocolate was definitely popular and described as sweet and yummy!

As part of our learning about The Three Little Pigs, we learned all about different types of materials. We then sorted different items and named the materials.
We have been learning about houses and homes so far this term and we read the story of The Three Little Pigs. We really enjoyed role playing the story in the provision and we also created a story map as a class to help us retell the story to an adult!

Over the summer holidays Puffins class had a make over. We have had an upstairs added to the class giving us more space and the opportuntity to take more children.
The children are enjoying using the changed space downstairs and hopefully after October half term we will be able to use upstairs.

Wagtails investigated the nutrition of different foods in science. We looked at packaging and interpreted the 'traffic light' symbols to find out whether the food was a healthy choice or an occasional snack.
Tuesday 30th September
Wagtails Class became real-life archaeologists for the afternoon. Children were given 'Stone Age poo' and had to dissect it to see the diets of early Stone Age people. From the activity, children found out that these particular Stone Age people ate lots of grains, berries, nuts, seeds and fish. Fascinatiung stuff!
In Science, year 4 have been conducting experiments to find out the effects certain drinks have on our teeth. Don't worry no children's teeth were used in this lesson!
Egg were placed in the different drinks and allowed to sit for three days. The results could be teeth chattering!
In Year 4 pupils carefully followed a recipe to make their own tasty treats, learning important skills along the way. Over the next few weeks, they will be reviewing their biscuits, thinking about what worked well and what could be improved. Soon, they will have the exciting challenge of adapting the recipe to create their very own unique versions!

In Reception we have been learning all about feelings and emotions. We read 'The Colour Monster' stories to help us identify different feelings. We designed our own Colour Monsters and have been doing check-ins about our own feelings in school.
In Year 2 history this week, the children have been exploring what school life was like during the Victorian era and how education has evolved over the decades. They were fascinated by old photographs of Livingstone when it was known as Clapham Road School, including images dating back to the early 1900s. The children loved examining the differences in classrooms, uniforms, and playgrounds, sparking lively discussions about how much has changed—and what has stayed the same!

Children recently enjoyed an engaging and educational workshop led by Jodie from the Safety Awareness Centre, focusing on carbon monoxide (CO) safety. Through interactive activities and lively discussion, Jodie helped pupils understand the dangers of CO and where it might be found in the home. Each child received a goody bag filled with fun resources and, most importantly, a carbon monoxide detector to help keep their families safe.
